Magical Wand Palace
One of the most major tasks I had at Fisher-Price was assisting with the design of the Little People Magical Wand Palace. My chief duties focused on the design of the wand and creating a preliminary CAD model of the palace for prototyping.
This playset is controlled by the wand, which when waved, activates features such as lights and sounds in the palace.
Wand Design
I initially started with rough thumbnail sketches that focused on incorporating forms and themes that tied into the princess narrative. The handle of the wand needed to have a large enough diameter to accommodate the battery box. This gave the added challenge of creating a design that would still read as a wand even with chunkier proportions.
I was inspired by medieval scepters in the form development, as they have a form factor that can be adapted into a wand-like aesthetic. Additionally, the association with royalty tied in well with the princess theme.
This is the final design that was selected and was passed on to the rest of the design group for further refinement and CMF studies.
Palace CAD
I was also responsible for translating rough foam core studies into preliminary CAD models to be used for prototyping.
